NEW INDUSTRIAL BUILDING AT THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD

Brooklyn, New York

The MRA team was pleased to participate in the design competition for the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation. The project was designed to take advantage of natural conditions such as daylight, wind, and water runoff with a contemporary building image.

The first floor program was composed of two 10,000 sq. ft. spaces designed for light industry. These industrial spaces were conditioned with radiant heating. The system offered user-controlled directional heating eliminating the need for unnecessary conditioned air.

The second and third floor provided twenty-eight 1500 sq. ft. spaces for light industrial or office use. These areas were clustered around an atrium designed to provide both daylight and natural ventilation. Each space was lit from both the exterior and the central area flooding the offices with natural light.

The amount of green space on the site was maximized with a green roof and landscaped green terraces. The roof was a 10,500 sq. ft. solar array to reduce the need to draw power from the grid.
