  THE JAMES STREET PARKING GARAGE

Peekskill, New York

The City of Peekskill graciously invited the MRA team to participate in the reshaping of the James Street Parking Garage. We were asked to submit three proposals with varying façade systems that would transform the structure of the parking garage and assist in beautifying the community.

The first option we proposed utilized polycarbonate panels. The panels were offered in a range of transparencies, which allowed us to be more playful with our design. The idea was to cover much of the existing structure, adding texture, color, and effervescent shadows to the building. By covering the majority of the structure, cars would be conveniently shaded while adding interest and complexity to the buildings skin. Our intention was to transform the existing garage into a modern structure that served as a large urban art-piece that the City of Peekskill could enjoy.

The second option applied colorful, opaque HPL (High Pressure Laminated) panels, creating allure and depth to the façade of the James Street Parking Garage. The simplicity and integrity of the original structure would be returned to the façade and the addition of interesting panels would make a unique object in which the community could take pride. At night the panels would be lit from behind emphasizing life, movement and adding a feeling of safety. The location of the panels could change over the life of the building to tie into the community as the fabric changed throughout the years.

The third option transformed the mundane parking garage into an elaborate vertical landscape along the James Street block. Our design utilized a mesh panel system, which would allow native vines to grow up the skin of the building. The use of perennial plants would enable the facade to constantly change with the seasons, bringing life and shape to the structure. We also incorporated a layer of metal, sculpted into a vine pattern, that would be embedded with electroluminescent wires and illuminate the area with a captivating glow.

Eric Hanson, an abstract painter living in Peekskill, NY, recently stated, "I saw your design presentation of the James Street Garage Facade for the city of Peekskill. I think the design you submitted is absolutely brilliant! I just sent off a note to the mayor encouraging them to do this proposal..."
