  BRANCUSI VISITOR AND CULTURAL CENTRE

Targu Jiu, Romania

The goal of this 1,800 square meter centre is to enhance the visitor's understanding of famed Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) in the context of Targu Jiu. Its design language will pay homage to Brancusi's use of Romanian vernacular ornament by incorporating some of his trademark elements: clear, powerful volumes interlocked through carefully selected proportions; and materials faithful to his use of stone and metal. The centre will also provide visitors with the opportunity to learn about the construction of Brancusi's Endless Column Ensemble and to contemplate it from a new perspective. The centre will also serve as an ideal venue for exhibitions by contemporary artists inspired by Brancusi's example as one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. Ultimately, our hope beyond the centre itself is for new architectural and landscaping elements in the city - part of an ongoing urban design master plan - will further enhance the great sense of pride the Ensemble's restoration has returned to the local community, and the new hope it portends for the city of Targu Jiu.
